Upwelling Zone: Manta Ray Mosaic

I had an Art Opening this past week at New Moon Gallery in Spokane.

The show was titled ‘Under the Surface: An Interplay with Otherness”.

The majority of this exhibition was focused on the intersection of my work in Mokuhanga (Japanese woodblock printmaking) and some recent explorations in ceramics.

The work also had a narrative focus on one of the most lovely and enigmatic of ocean creatures, the giant manta ray, (Mobula birostris).

Some of new work that I presented at this exhibition included:

Lightboxes-
-integrating textured ceramic frames and Mokuhanga prints, with backlit illumination.

Manta Sculptures-
-these sculptures could be pedestal-displayed or wall-mounted. Range of surface textures and glazes.

Mosaics-
-Each of these wall arrays was 40 x 40 inches, with a 18 inch Mokuhanga print mounted in the center. They were very fun to make- except for the crash course in Autocad I had to give myself to precisely cut out the tile forms.

In addition to these newer explorations, the show contained a cross-section of print and ceramic work from the last few years, all marine themed.
