About David Roon
Ecological Artwork
I am an artist working at the interface of visual art and Conservation Biology, and a professor at the University of Idaho (Natural Resources and Society).
My art practice encompasses mixed media and printmaking, with a strong grounding in ceramics. Thematically, my work explores the interface between humans and the global biosphere (particularly coastal and marine ecosystems). Specific areas of conceptual focus include alterity, otherness, and hierarchy in depictions of non-human entities, the use of mythological imagery to explore contemporary ecological threat, and absurdity and tragicomedy in the interface between human and non-human evolution. I also create Reconciliation Art- in-situ installations that serve an ecological function (restoring ecological function, enhancing habitat, etc.).
I also love to make gigantic wheel thrown vessels (planters, fountains, jars). I sell these locally and nationally.
